Fossils are the reason for many wars and climate crisis. Now it’s our unique opportunity to finally put an end to this addiction

My name’s Anastasiia Onufriv. I’m activist in Fridays For Future Ukraine. I left my home about 2 months ago after russian fascists bombed my region, Lvivska oblast. Currently I’m based in Sachsen Anhalt. Before that I believed ruscists wouldn’t dare to touch the West, so close to the European border. I believed Europe would never forgive that. We, Ukrainians believed it when you said “never again” after World War II. But seems like you forgave and forgot. And russists bombed Lviv again and again. And they destroyed lives and homes of many more innocent people. And Europe still seems to ignore the fact that it’s right under your nose and you can be the next.

We, Ukrainians are tremendously grateful for your help. Unfortunately this is not enough to stop the genocide – the ruining of our homes and lives, killing and raping our children. This war is fueled by your money. Since the start of it, European union has paid 50+ bln euros to russia for the fossil fuel and germany is nr 1 importer of rus fossils. On top of that Germany ignored the ban on selling weapons to russia since 2014. These weapons have been killing us, destroying our homes.

This makes me very angry and this anger is very heavy because it borders with despair and powerlessness. It’s like I’m walking on a thin line and any moment I can lose my balance and fall into the ocean of despair and depression. But I keep on fighting because I found hope in the embargo.

We understand that you’re anxious about it, you’re afraid to lose your comfort, the stability and predictability of your lives. But please, understand us also. We are terrified of losing our homes, family and friends. In fact, many of us have already lost places and ppl we love. Some gone through the loss twice – 8 years ago and now.

On top of that, Russits are commiting ecocide In Ukraine. They’re destroying our environment, wiping out the ecosystems. The whole Azov sea might just disappear because dangerous chemicals from the Azovsteel factory in mariupol are leaking into it and can kill off all the flora and fauna there. They attacked one the largest seedbank in europe. Disturbed Chornobyl area, bombed Enerhodar – the largest nuclear power plany in Europe, threatening nuclear catastrophy far worse than Chornobyl. Not to mention bombing and setting on fire numerous oil bases around the country.

But Not only ukrainians are suffering from Eurooean fossil fuel addiction. Wars in Afghanistan, Chechnia, Georgia, , Syria, supplying weapons to some African coutnries. To name a few military endeavour’s of Kreml

Is this enough proof tha fossils means violation of human rights and destruction? Besides, isn’t switching to clean energy what we, climate activists, wanted all along? The scientists have been warning us that we’re running out of time. You know it, right? If the world doesn’t switch to renewables and cut down production & consumption now, you, europeans will have to give up your comfort anyways. In just 20-30 years You will have to wage wars for survival. Imagine evryday life where you have to think where to get clean water and food, how not to die of simple desease and wounds. This is normal life for many Ukrainians right now and mlns of people in the world. But The politicians tell that you can’t afford to switch to renewables right now, it’s very complicated. Bullshit! Thy’re just finding an excuse not to do it. There’s money, they have it, the gas and oil companies have it.

This is our unique opportunity to finally get off the fossil fuel addiction that’s been killing us. I want you to realise – this is an emergency.

For me this war has been a waking up call. It’s been very hard but at the same time I’m very hopeful that the rest of the world wakes up too and realises that we can’t live our lives like before. We must change our habits and our political-economic systems that are based on infinite gdp growth and consumerism. We’re running out of time.

You say we are Europe, prove it, do what you must, be brave like ukraine, stand with ukraine, fight for the full embargo with us.
